What is Depth / Dominance?
Quick answer
Depth (dominance) is, once you appear in a question, how much of the answer you own and whether the AI picks you first, the depth of your presence. Put simply: owning the room you're standing in.
Showing up is the easy half. Depth is the hard half: of the brands the AI names for a question, are you first and recommended, or last and hedged? Two brands can both "appear" in the same answer and have completely different depth, one quoted as the top pick, the other tacked on at the end.
Depth is the second axis of the GEO map, the partner to Coverage. If coverage is created by filling blank space, depth is earned by stacking evidence. The AI gives its strongest recommendation to the brand it trusts most, and trust comes from convergence: accurate facts it can verify, comparison content that frames you well, and (most of all) outside sources that independently name you. When many credible places say the same thing, the engine treats it as settled.
The failure mode here has a name: mentioned but not chosen. A brand can rack up coverage, appear in question after question, and still lose because it's shallow everywhere, never the pick. Depth is what turns presence into preference. Without it, being visible is just being background.

Frequently asked
How is depth different from coverage?
Coverage is how many questions you appear in; depth is how dominant you are within each one. Breadth versus winning.
Should I go deep or wide first?
Deep first, in a focused area. A visible win in a few questions beats a faint presence across many.
Why am I named a lot but still not chosen?
That's the "mentioned but not chosen" trap, coverage without depth. You're present, but nothing tips the AI toward picking you.
