What is Share of Model?
Quick answer
Share of Model is your brand's share of voice inside AI answers, the number of times the AI names you divided by the total mentions of every brand across the same set of buyer questions. Think Share of Voice, but inside the AI's reply.
Marketers have long tracked Share of Voice, your slice of the total conversation in an ad channel or in search. Share of Model moves that idea to where the buying conversation is heading: the answer an AI writes. When a buyer asks and the engine names four brands, your Share of Model is simply how large your slice of those mentions is, across all the questions that matter.
It's a results metric, the north star. Rankings, traffic, and impressions describe activity; Share of Model describes outcome: are you the one the AI actually picks? And it never travels alone. It pairs with Coverage (how many buyer questions you appear in at all) to form the two dimensions of AI presence. High coverage with a small share is the classic trap: named everywhere, chosen almost nowhere, and still losing.
Reading it well means reading the trend, not one snapshot. A single question on a single day is noise; a cluster of questions measured over weeks is signal. A high Share of Model in the questions your buyers actually ask is what "winning" looks like in AI search.

Frequently asked
How is it different from SEO rank?
Rank is your position in a list of links. Share of Model is your share of the names inside the AI's written answer, a different surface entirely.
How is it measured?
Conceptually: run the real buying questions across several AI engines, a few times each, and count how often you're named versus every competitor. (We don't publish our exact question set or scoring.)
What's a good percentage?
It's relative to your competitors in your category, not an absolute, the goal is to lead the set that matters, then widen.
How is it different from Semrush's AI Visibility Score?
That's a separate third-party number. Share of Model is our own measure of who the AI names, built around your specific buyer questions.
