What is Topic cluster?
Quick answer
A topic cluster is GEO's strategic unit, one concept you want AI to firmly link to your brand, together with the whole range of buyer questions around it. You optimize by the cluster, not by a single keyword.
Keywords are how old SEO thought about demand: one phrase, one page, one rank. But a buyer asking an AI doesn't stick to one phrase, they ask the same underlying thing a dozen ways, follow up, rephrase, compare. A topic cluster captures that reality: it's a concept plus all its question-variations, treated as one target.
The shift changes the goal. Instead of ranking for a keyword, you're trying to make the AI associate your brand with a whole area of buyer intent, so that however someone phrases the question, you're a name that comes up. That association is built across many pieces of content and signals reinforcing the same theme, not a single optimized page.
Strategy enters when you choose your clusters. Spreading across too many at once leaves you faint in all of them; two or three, chosen well, let you actually dominate. The choice weighs where you have genuine strength against where competitors are weak, enough to point you at a fight you can win. (How that choice is made in detail is our craft; the principle is simple: few clusters, chosen for winnability.)
