What is SEO vs GEO?
Quick answer
SEO optimizes your page to rank high among the ten blue links. GEO optimizes so AI reads a few sources and names or recommends you in the answer it writes. SEO wins a spot in a list; GEO wins a spot in the answer.
The two aren't rivals, but they aren't the same job. SEO plays out on a results page: you compete for position, and a higher slot earns more clicks. GEO plays out inside a synthesized answer: the engine reads a handful of sources and writes one reply, naming some brands and leaving out the rest. Position on a list versus presence in a paragraph.
That difference has a hard edge: ranking first does not guarantee the AI mentions you at all. The engine may trust a third-party listicle over your page and quote that instead. So a brand can own the top organic result and still be absent from the answer sitting above it.
The healthy stance is both-and, not either-or. Your own site is where you keep the facts an engine needs, accurate, structured, easy to lift. Earned media is where trust is built, the outside sources that make the AI reach for you. And you measure them differently: SEO by rank and traffic, GEO by Share of Model, your share of the names inside the answer.
Frequently asked
Do I need SEO before GEO?
Usually yes. A weak foundation gets fixed first; a page the engine can't crawl or trust won't be cited either.
Does good SEO automatically mean good GEO?
No. Ranking well helps but doesn't guarantee the AI names you, it may prefer third-party sources over your page.
How is measuring GEO different from SEO?
SEO tracks rank and clicks on a results page. GEO tracks Share of Model, how often you're named inside AI answers.
