What is AEO?

Quick answer

AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is optimizing your content so answer engines quote it as the reply. The focus: write answer-first, in structures a machine can lift cleanly (a crisp definition, a table, an FAQ) so the AI can take your exact point without rewriting it.

GEO asks whether the AI recommends your brand. AEO asks a narrower question first: can the AI even extract a usable answer from your page? If your key point is buried three paragraphs down, wrapped in throat-clearing, the engine skips it and quotes someone clearer.

AEO sits in the middle of a chain: found → quoted → recommended. It's the bridge between plain visibility and being the source the AI leans on. The work is mostly about form. Lead every page with the answer in the first sentence, before the context. Put facts in structures that travel well, a definition it can copy, a comparison table, a short FAQ, a clear number. These are the shapes AI pulls into an answer, because they need no interpretation.

Structure helps the machine understand you, so schema (FAQPage, Article, Organization) reinforces the same content in a format engines parse directly. AEO doesn't win the recommendation on its own. But without it, even a brand the AI trusts stays un-quotable, because there's nothing clean to take.

Frequently asked

How is AEO different from GEO and SEO?

SEO gets you found, AEO gets you quoted, GEO gets you recommended, three linked layers, not three choices.

What content gets cited by AI most?

Answer-first definitions, FAQs, comparison tables, and clearly sourced numbers, anything the engine can lift without rewriting.

Do I need schema?

It helps. Schema restates your content in a format engines read directly, so your answer travels more reliably.
