What is Entity?
Quick answer
An entity (identity profile) is the set of signals that let AI classify who you correctly are, which brand, which industry, where. It's built from Organization schema, a Google Business Profile, Wikidata, and a consistent name everywhere you appear.
Before an AI can recommend you, it has to know you're a real, specific thing, not confuse you with a similarly named company, a product, or a person. That recognition is what "entity" means: the machine's confident answer to "who is this?"
The signals stack up. Schema markup tells the engine, in a language it parses directly, that you're an Organization with this name, this location, this category. A Google Business Profile confirms it in Google's own graph. A Wikidata record anchors you in the open database AI systems read to verify entities. And underneath all of it, one detail does quiet, heavy lifting: consistency, the same name, address, and description across your site, your profiles, and third-party listings.
When those signals agree, the AI trusts its own classification and reaches for you with confidence. When they conflict (three spellings of your name, a stale address, a category that doesn't match) the engine hesitates, or worse, blends you with someone else. Entity work is unglamorous, but it's the floor everything else stands on: no clean identity, no reliable recommendation.
Frequently asked
How is an entity different from a backlink?
A backlink is a vote for a page. An entity is the AI's understanding of who you are, identity, not popularity.
Do I need Wikidata or Wikipedia?
Wikidata helps a lot as an entity anchor. Wikipedia is harder and optional; Wikidata usually comes first.
Why does AI confuse my brand with another?
Usually thin or inconsistent signals (mismatched names, missing schema, no entity anchor) so the engine can't tell you apart.
