What is AI Overviews?
Quick answer
AI Overviews is the AI-written answer Google places at the top of the results page, above the ten traditional links. If the Overview doesn't mention you, you're nearly invisible, even when you rank well below it.
For years the game was to climb into the top handful of blue links. AI Overviews moved the finish line higher: Google now writes a synthesized answer above those links, and for many searches it's the first (sometimes only) thing a user reads. Being the third organic result matters far less if the answer sitting above never names you.
It also breaks an old assumption. Ranking well used to mean you'd be seen; the brands quoted in an Overview are not always the ones ranking highest beneath it, because the AI draws on the sources it trusts, which can be third-party. The overlap between who wins the Overview and who ranks in the classic top ten has fallen sharply: the share of AI Overview citations that also rank in Google's top 10 dropped from 76% to 38% in under a year (Ahrefs, 2025 to 2026).
The consequence is zero-click: the user gets their answer in the Overview and never scrolls, so a high rank can produce a view without a visit. That's why rank alone no longer measures visibility. What matters is whether you're inside the answer, which is exactly the surface GEO optimizes for.
Frequently asked
How are AI Overviews different from a featured snippet?
A featured snippet quotes one page; an AI Overview synthesizes several sources into a new written answer.
How do I get into AI Overviews?
By being a trusted, quotable source on the topic (clean facts, structured content, and outside mentions) not just by ranking.
How do they affect traffic?
They drive zero-click behavior: users read the answer and may not visit, so being named inside it matters more than rank.
