Generative UI, Google’s system that builds custom interactive visuals and tools inside a search result rather than linking out to a website, is moving from AI Mode into AI Overviews, the larger of the two surfaces. Google confirmed the expansion in a back-to-school announcement published in August 2026, with full availability in AI Overviews expected within the coming weeks, according to Search Engine Journal.

What Is Generative UI, and Why Does the Move to AI Overviews Change Things?

Generative UI first appeared inside AI Mode in November 2025, alongside the Gemini 3 model, per Search Engine Journal. AI Overviews, by contrast, is the larger of the two surfaces, per Search Engine Journal. That difference in reach makes this rollout a materially different moment from the November 2025 debut.

In practice, the system constructs a custom layout on the fly based on what the query needs. A search for “ph scale,” according to Google’s official blog (August 2026), returns an interactive visual directly inside an AI Overview. A follow-up question refines it further, such as plotting citrus fruits on that same scale. In AI Mode, Google has also demonstrated it generating a functional mortgage calculator that lets users compare loan terms side by side.

What Has Google Actually Launched?

The August 2026 back-to-school package bundles several features. Generative UI is the headline, but the full rollout is broader, per Google’s official blog:

  • Generative UI: Launched globally in English in AI Mode; now rolling out in AI Overviews, with full availability expected within weeks.
  • Practice quizzes: Now globally available in English, free of charge, in both AI Overviews and AI Mode. Covers subjects from math and science to foreign languages, plus nine standardized tests: ACT, AP, ENEM, GRE, JEE, LSAT, MCAT, NEET, and SAT. Built in partnership with The Princeton Review, Careers360, PhysicsWallah, and Akira Enem.
  • Lens coaching in Search: Lets users photograph a problem and receive an AI Overview with explanations and error identification. Rolling out globally in English over the coming weeks.
  • Notebooks in AI Mode: Gemini Notebook (formerly NotebookLM) integrated into AI Mode, rolling out across more than 180 countries in English. Notebooks created in the Gemini app sync automatically.
  • Custom file creation in AI Mode: Users can ask Search to generate documents, slides, spreadsheets, or text files from uploaded materials. Already live globally in English in AI Mode; coming to AI Overviews soon.

Which Queries Will Trigger Generative UI?

Google has not published a list of query types that will activate generative UI as the AI Overviews rollout expands, per Search Engine Journal. The examples shown so far cover scientific scales, comparison tools, and calculators, with Google’s model deciding when a visual or interactive experience would genuinely help. At I/O 2026, Google stated generative UI would be available to everyone in Search that summer, free of charge, per Search Engine Journal. Wednesday’s announcement is the follow-through on that commitment.

What This Means for AI-Search Visibility

Here is the practical reality: if a page’s main value to a visitor is that it does something (calculates, converts, visualizes, compares), that page is now competing with a result that performs the same function inside the search result, with no click required.

Search Engine Journal notes directly that “sites built around calculators, converters, or comparison tools could see more direct overlap as it reaches AI Overviews.” That observation is accurate. The expansion from AI Mode to AI Overviews, the larger of the two surfaces, dramatically widens the audience exposed to those in-SERP (in-search-results-page) tools.

The distinction worth drawing, in Hingewise’s view, is between content that is fully substitutable and content that is not. A mortgage calculator embedded in an AI Overview covers the standard use case: enter numbers, see a monthly payment. A lender’s page that explains how rate environments affect adjustable-rate risk, draws on original data, or establishes a trusted editorial voice is not substitutable by a generated widget. The exposure is highest for “pure tool” pages where the interactive element is the whole product and surrounding editorial content is thin.

For brands thinking about AI-search visibility (being found, cited, and recommended by AI systems, not just ranked by traditional search), this shift highlights a structural question: is your content’s value in the function it performs, or in the depth and credibility it establishes? Generative UI can replicate the former. For the latter, AI systems still reach out to the open web to find sources worth attributing.

Hingewise’s read: generative UI in AI Overviews is an accelerant for a dynamic that was already underway. Utility pages built around a single tool with little surrounding depth were already at elevated zero-click risk (meaning users could get their answer without visiting any site). The AI Overviews expansion shortens the timeline. It does not change the direction.

Before Generative UI Reaches Your Category: 6 Things to Check

  • Identify which of your pages serve primarily a “tool” function (calculators, converters, quizzes, lookup tables) versus editorial or analytical depth.
  • Check your search analytics for queries where an interactive visual or tool would fully satisfy user intent without a click to your site.
  • Assess whether your tool pages have substantive surrounding content (methodology, context, expert explanation) or are thin wrappers around a widget.
  • Check whether your brand name or domain is cited in any existing AI-generated answers for your target queries.
  • Evaluate whether your content establishes clear authorship, sourcing, or original research that gives AI systems a reason to attribute rather than replicate.
  • Segment your traffic by query type over the coming weeks as the AI Overviews rollout progresses in English globally.

What to Watch Next

Google has not specified which query categories will trigger generative UI beyond the educational examples shown so far. The mortgage calculator demonstration in AI Mode suggests the scope likely extends well beyond student use cases. Full AI Overviews availability in English is expected within weeks of the August 2026 announcement, per Search Engine Journal. The variable to track: whether Google publishes clearer guidance on what triggers generative UI generation versus a standard link, and how frequently the model chooses to build rather than point.
